I just finished building my new PC, everything was going smoothly until I tried to install Windows Vista. In the middle of the installation a black screen appeared stating "0xc00000e9 An unexpected I/O error has occurred.
I even tried installing Windows XP and I receive something similar. "***STOP: 0x0000007b" "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to my computer." What could be the problem? My HDD is being recognized because it shows up at the beginning of the BIOs but I went back to check anyway and replugged it, and still the same errors. The HDD is an OEM WD 500gb SATA, I have the connector from the PSU connected to it, as well as a SATA data cable connected to the motherboard. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks..but that didn't really help me at all. I decided to put in one of my old IDE HDD from my other computer, downloaded partition hdd software, it detected my SATA 500gb HDD, etc. Tried installing Windows Vista again, still received the same error. So I then removed the SATA hdd leaving just the IDE one and tried to install, and yet again received the same error. So I'm thinking its not a problem with my HDD. Any ideas of what could be the problem?

Can you please list all your parts, and tell us what you currently have connected.

I have the exact same problem... I just built my PC and I get the same error as I try to install Windows Vista. Could you please give me an idea of what could be wrong? What kind of wire/device should I check? Is it my DVD device?

The original poster has not given us the courtesy of telling us what fixed it, looks like we have to keep guessing.

Hi Guys,
I see this error too so wanted to help you guys since that poster who said it fixed it a bit seflish not to tell you. here was my error with 4 hard disks, none of them had a problem, I tried all, 1, 2, 3 and none. I still received the error. XP setup would simply freeze and windows 7 ultimate would give this error: If you continue to recieve this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer. status: 0xc00000e9 Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred" For a minute I thought soundcard, unplugged it, still the same. I replaced my video card, still got the error. I had broken the end plastic notch on the pcii slot end that kind of fits into the little hole but really has no function other than that. I thought maybe I broke this and that caused my problem as it started occurring after that break. So was thinking oh no a new board. But you know what no, it is not the video card, it is not the hard disks, it is not even the usb. It is simply a corrupt or bad image of Windows 7 on your DVD. Luckily I had made another copy of my beta Windows 7 64 bit so went to try that today and hey presto it works. So guys cheer up, just burn another image of the ISO and you will be fine. While I was searching for the error I came across this forum. So in order to give you the answer I had to register hey but no problem it may help many people out there. Have a good day. Simon |
