CD-ROM Drive Not Reading Correctly
My CD-ROM drive does not recognize that a CD-ROM has been placed in the drive unless the CD-ROM was in the drive at boot up. This means each time I want to utilize the drive, I must place the CD-ROM in the drive and then re-boot my machine.
Could this be a registry problem? Any ideas? |

You are looking at My Computer to verify this, right? It sounds like you are talking about auto-play.

Yes, My Computer will not recognize the disk. The drive letter shows up but when clicked it asks that I insert a CD. If I then reboot the machine, I can view the contents of the CD via My Computer and I can read / run the CD correctly. If I then open and close the drive door, the drive fails to recognize the CD is in the drive.

Im gonna assume that as long as you dont remove that CD you can access it with no problem. If you were to play that cd, remove it then put it back in you would require another reboot before it could play it again.
Check your event viewer for an error. Start>control panel>administration>event viewer>then select system. See if you see any logged errors for your cdrom (errors will have a red circle with an X in the middle). If you do see one click the most recent one and then post the description if you dont understand it, also try clicking the link provided by microsoft to futher explain or possibly fix the problem. |

The only logged error that I see is:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: szkg In an attempt to solve the problem, I swapped in a couple of older drives that I had laying around. The drives I put in were: Hitachi GD-2000 and LG CD-RW CED-8120B Unfortunately, I see the same behaviour with these drives. CDs & DVDs can be read as long as they are in the drive when the computer is booted up. As soon as I open and close a drive bay door, the drive no longer recognizes that media is in the drive. |

Could try changing the cable to the drives.
