I seen someone who built there own server and who stored a bunch of pirated files in it, and i was wondering how do you build your own personal server.

There is no difference between a server and any other computer. Just build a computer with a hard drive big enough to store all your data. Being that you won't be running applications from it, you can use a motherboard with integrated video and it doesn't need an expensive processor.

yup, what glc said. I run an FTP server on my desktop so that I can access my files from anywhere. It's just a regular old PC that i built.
