2nd Hard Drive For OLD Computer

I have an old computer and want to add a 2nd hard Drive, or just replace the one I have to obtain additional storage capacity. I don't really understand the new terminology, but want to acquire a drive that is compatible with this system.

The system has an Intel SE440BX2 Motherboard with on-board IDE controller. P-III processor and a whopping 484 Meg RAM. The existing (working) HD is a Quantum ST Fireball P/N ST64A011 with 5 GB capacity.

I intend to wipe Windows 98 and install Suse Linux 9.1 and use it as a file server on my home network. I am thinking that I would load Linux on the existing drive and use a second drive for data.

Looking on the Web I don't see drives that appear to be compatible - are they still available? I'm not thinking about RAID. Is PATA the same as what I have (IDE)? What current terminology is equivalent to my old IDE?

Thanks,
Jim

PATA is what you need and there are still many available to choose from.

I have a ASUS P2B-F that uses the 440BX chipset (same chipset as the SE440BX2) and I have two 80GB IDE hard drives connected to it (along with two 40GB IDE hard drives). I'm not sure if it'll work with 120GB or larger hard drives (never tried).

Yes, PATA is the same as IDE, EIDE or ATA.

I do not remember whether the bios limit on a SE440BX2 is 32gb or 128gb. You may need a PCI controller card to use a large drive.
