WD 500gb for boot drive?

I'm building a new system, and I already have the Western Digital WD5000AAKS (500gb SATA) hard drive bought. I also have a couple of full IDE hard drives from the old computer.

I want to install Windows fresh, of course, but I'm wondering; is the 500gb HD reliable enough to put my Windows installation on and to use for most of my files? Because I've seen some reviews on Newegg suggesting there's a certain percentage that give out. And are there any other reasons I shouldn't use a 500gb as a main drive?

I can add the IDE drives later for additional storage, using an IDE controller card, but I'd love to have my main drives on SATA.

Any drive can go bad without warning. That drive should be fine. Just make sure when you are done installing windows and all your software to do a full backup of your hardrive. Then you can just do incremental backups for the data that has changed. Good luck with your build.

As mentioned, any drive can fail, even one made by the best manufacturer. The fact that you're already concerned about the WD would indicate you'll not be too happy running it: you'll be worried. I know I would.

Here's a recent, and short thread on it:
