Sata DVD Not working and computer hangs

Greetings to all,
I recently (has not even been a month) just built a new computer system. Here are the parts:

Mid Tower ATX Case
Asus M2A-VM Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core Processor
2 GB (2 x 1GB) Patriot DDR2 PC6400 800MHZ Memory
Diamond Radeon HD3850 Video Card PCI Express
Western Digital 500GB Sata HD (7200RPM 16mb buffer)
Cooler Master 600W Power Supply
Cooler Master Heatsink and Fan for the Processor
LG SATA DVD Burner (LG|GSA-H62NK)

Now when I built the computer, the DVD burner ran fine as I installed Windows XP Pro with it. After all install was complete, I noticed that the computer hangs during the startup at Bios. It shows the Hard drive and the DVD burner, and lags, and then starts to boot up windows. When I'm in windows, and I run some programs, it will freeze. For example, when I play a 3D Game like Counter Strike Source, when it freezes, it has this eternal beep (that comes from the computer speakers) and I have to manually restart the computer. Sometimes at the startup, it recognizes my hard drive fine, but my DVD burner will be named something weird, like some unrecognized characters. The problem has been persisten for the first 3 weeks of running the system. Temperature is fine, it's not over heating. I got 2 fans in my case, one to draw in cool air, and one to pull hot air out, and I bought a heat sink for my cpu. It was frustrating running my computer, because when I do thinks like multitask, or other things, the computer would lag (just freeze) and hang. After those initial 3 weeks of hell (and I did spend alot of money building this computer), my DVD Burner is no longer recognized in windows xp.

The funny thing is, when I go to "My Computer" in Windows XP, and my DVD drive is not showing, then my computer is running fine with no issues at all. But when Windows recognizes my DVD burner in "My Computers" then that's when I start to get the lag issues. The DVD Burner used to work fine (it's not even a month old), but now it's not recognized in windows xp anymore. But when it is recognized, it makes my computer crash and hang real bad. The DVD drive powers up fine, and loads and ejects fine.

Any idea on what's causing the lag or hang? Any idea why my DVD drive is not working in XP anymore? And finally, why is it that when the DVD drive is recognized in Windows XP, I get issues, and when it's not recognized, my computer runs like a champ. I'm just curious if it's a coincidence or if anyone has had similar issues. I used to have my computer freeze alot on me, but ever since the DVD isn't recognized in Windows anymore, I stopped having issues (but now the DVD Burner is not recognized in XP).

Thanks in advance!

Reseat SATA cable, replace it if this doesn't fix the problem. If replacing the SATA cable doesn't correct the issue, send the drive back for a replacement.

I/O device problems cause major instabilities in Windows machines. Try reconnecting your sata cable and then try to replace it. If this doesn't work try another dvd drive and check if you have problems. If you don't, replace the drive.
