How important is a good case?

Alright, so my family has had their fair share of computers. Right now I want to whip up a gaming rig as quickly and cheaply as possible and I just want to use one of our older generic ATX cases. I'm not sure how good quality this case is, and I'm not really going to be using anything that's in it now, just the case itself.

I'm going to get my own PSU and everything, I just want to know if it's okay to stick some expensive new parts in an old warn out case.

If its ATX, everything will fit. The only issue might be that gaming components need some good cooling. An older case is usually not designed for that. Take some pics if you can.

You might be able to mod the case with more fans if it's not up to the task the way it is now.

Unless you are going to use some really higher end stuff, the case will probably be fine.

Well whats part exactly do you plan on putting in the case? Depending on the hardware you buy and how big the case is you can run into clearence issues. Especially with the video cards out today.

Well, I like a big case, because it has good cooling, for example, I can install 12cm fan at the back panel, the bigger fan is also quieter. That is my first consideration when buying a case.

I have a great example. I bought an coolermax centurion 5 ATX case for my rig listed below. It ended up not being sufficent cooling for the proc and vid card. I went with the antec 900. You have to look at what hardware you will be putting in it. Where the hardware will be locaited in the case, and finally you have to have proper air flow.

You also wanna make sure that the case is sturdy enough for your needs. If you plan on hauling this thing around to LAN parties or transporting it anywhere on a semi-reular basis, you'll want a strong steel case. Older models don't tend to have a problem with this, but if you were to buy a new one, keep that in mind.

I just rebuilt a computer for someone using this case:

Excellent cooling.

I lug this guy around to lan parties:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811164040

However, it needed some work. I had to open up the flaps in the back covering the fans to let more air through and drill bigger holes in the rear grill. The drive flaps in the front tend to break their hinges. But...decent case with a window and handle for less than $25.

Why not? I'm a "gamer" too, I just don't use my computer for that. I have a PlayStation 2.
