Connecting IDE to a SATA connection

Since my MB has only one onboard IDE connection and I have IDE hard drives is it possible/ recommended to connect the IDE drives to the SATA connections thus avoiding the use of a PCI card?

They make adapters, but my recommendation is to get a new SATA drive and retire the IDE drives to external use with USB adapters for backups.
