Multi drive setup, advice appriciated

Hello all, hopefully this is a simple question. I have 3 drives, and i was wanting advice on how i should set them up, they are all up and running with no problems, but what i put where is what i'm curious about.
I have a 40 gig drive with an 8mb cache with my XP OS on it, an older 120 gig WD with 8mb cache i was using for storage, and a new WD 500 gig with a 16mb cache. I was going to keep my OS on the 40, use the 500 for primary storage, and the 120 for secondary storage and back up.
The issuse i was considering was, the point of having my OS on the 40 gig was to protect my storage from viruses and failure, since the OS disk gets the most use (i'm assuming). The second issue is, with a 16 mb cache, would using the 500 gig drive as my OS disk have any real world performance gains?
Thank you for your time

It all depends on what you're doing. Certain situations will improve if the main HDD is the one with the 16MB cache, but overall I don't think you'll see much of an improvement at all. I'd keep everything the way it is.
