Combining Dell towers

I have been using a Dell Dimension xps R400 computing tower and recently purchased a new Inspiron 530 tower. I want to combine the hard drive and expanded memory of my old computer with my new one. Making the new tower the lead and the old one the slave. I am afraid to start this project without some really good directions as I do not want to mess up my new nor old computers. Jeff Dye

So you just want to install the hard drive from your old computer into your new one?

And you want to do the same with the memory?

You won't be able to do much with the XPS R400. It uses a different memory type. You might be able to put the hard drive in but only if there is an available IDE channel.

You want to make your new computer the master computer and the old computer the slave computer? You mean like in a network? Not sure what you're getting at.

You cannot put either the memory or the hard drive from the R400 into the new 530. The R400 uses SDRAM, the 530 uses DDR2. The R400 uses an IDE hard drive, the 530 uses SATA and does not even have an IDE controller.

You can simply install an Ethernet adapter into the R400 if it doesn't have one already, and network the 2 computers together with a switch or router or crossover cable. How are you connected to the Internet and what hardware do you use for that?
