drives: master,slave,cs... which?

i just installed 2 new identical internal drives (both are maddog megastore 18x triple format dvd-rw $39 each & came with roxio creator 8.2). i also replaced the 40 wire cable with 80 wire. my question is whether or not to set them up as master/slaves or leave them cable select.
my comp is a dell 4700 (circa 2005) intel x86 family 15 model 3 stepping 4 3.0ghz, 4gb 533 ddr2 dual channel, 160gb sata 7200 hard drive. when i removed the old drives i noticed both were set to cs so i decided to set the new drives up the same way. would there be any advantage to set them up as master & slave? or leave them both cs?
also the new 80 wire cable was clearly marked to install the black end into master, the center one to slave, & the blue end to system. i think i remember GLC comment on another thread to someone that you should always connect the black end to the system, any reason?

You could always test the CS vs. Master/Slave

In CS, the drive on the "end" of the cable is the primary aka master drive...
(blue end usually matches the color of the blue system connection)

If you're using a 80 wire IDE cable then the CS (cable select) jumper setting should be used.

The 80 wire IDE is designed to be used with the CS jumper setting. You can use the master/slave jumper setting as long as you put the drives on the proper connectors. Either way the drives and system will perform the same...no advantage other than compatibility between drive and type of cable. 40 wire IDE cables use the master/slave jumper setting. 80 wire IDE cables use the CS jumper setting.

The blue connector plugs into the motherboard. The black connector plugs into the drive you want as master and the grey middle connector plugs into the drive you want as slave. I really don't believe glc ever said the black connector plugs into the motherboard.

i could have been mistaken about the topic glc was refering to. but i recall he said something to someone in another thread about black connector to the mobo, maybe he said master... no offense intended...

If you are using 80 wire Ultra ATA cables on both IDE channels (which you should be), you can set all drives to CS. Master goes on the end, slave in the middle. Make sure the correct end is on the motherboard, it will be the end that is *NOT* black.

Experiment with placements and combinations, it can't hurt.

I have never seen a bad reply by glc.. always hope he responds to my posts.

Once I posted a question re a hard drive problem, and mentioned what I thought the problem was and best solution (I'm pretty experienced buliding my own coputers, upgrading and repairing those of friends, etc), and had 4 or 5 responses from knowledgeable PCMech members supporting my idea. Was just about to start working on the computer when a message arrived from glc basically saying.. " before you do all that, try .... " He was dead-on, and saved me a lot of work.

I look for his posts all the time.

glc was actually in the business (I think he said he's retired or semi-retired now) and built and repaired probably thousands of computers over the years so he has first hand knowledge of almost every conceivable situation that comes up on these threads. When he posts in a thread I pay attention because I know his responses are most likely the solution to the problem. That's why I was pretty sure he never said the black connector goes to the motherboard, someone with his knowledge and experience would never say that.

Computers are only a hobby for me and I'm hit and miss when it comes to helping people with their computer problems. glc is the master.
