CPU fan noise
I started hearing a strange noise that was apparently coming from my cpu fan. It got very loud by the next day. No errors or problems, just noise. I took the heatsink/fan off and cleaned out a lot of dust and put it back on. Now I get a CPU fan fail, low speed error message on boot (and noise is the same.)
I have an old AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 2.0GHz Socket 939 Single-Core Processor. Will a new fan/heatsink solve the problem? Is this fan/heatsink compatible? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103166 Thanks for the help |

It sounds like the bearing is failing, so you will need a new one. That one you list isn't the highest quality: it has a rifle bearing instead of a ball bearing. I'd get a fan with a ball bearing instead.

Another option would be to just replace the fan on the heatsink. It should only be held on by 4 screws. Remove the screws and take the fan to a local computer shop and get another of the same size with the right type of power connector.
