A friend asked me to build him a computer for his recording studio. I have never used SAS hard drives, are they loud? Being 15000 RPM and all.

I think all 15,000 RPM HDDs will be sort of noisy and will run hot.

Are they any louder than the Raptor hard drives? Those are very commonly used in recording studios

They may be - they will probably have a very pronounced whine.

I ordered a Fujitsu from new egg, I have a machine already that has a sas controller on the motherboard I will see how loud it is and let you guys know. I am not sure I should be too worried about noise since the guy's studio has a control room and the recording rooms are completely seperate. Seems when I looked up some of the companies that "specialize" in making them such as Apple, they seem to emphasize alot about noise. I have yet to go into a recording studio that had computers in the sound proof rooms.

Ok, my hard drive is not here yet but a friend of mine has one he is not using. He brought in today and we ran it. It is no noisier than my 10k raptors but it definately gets very very hot.
If I decide to use one on this project it will go in a fan cooled cage but since those are noisy I will have to install a fan controller to slow the fan down

I have used Coolermaster Cooldrive housings in the past to cut down both the heat and the noise on SCSI drives.

Thanks glc, is that an internal unit? Does it slide into a 5.25" bay?

Exactly. There are several models, I understand the newer ones even have a fan controller. Do a Google on "coolermaster cooldrive" and check it out.

On that one I linked, the drive mounts inside the finned aluminum housing, the top plate has a thermal pad that sits on top of the drive, and it has a 40mm fan behind the snapon front plate that brings air in.
