2 Quad VS 4 dual core

Hi

I've been asked to recommend on a new Database server here at work
(The Database is about 4 gig consisting of about 90 Kollums, and growing)
Obviously I/O is the main bottleneck

The thing is that i'm in doubt between a 4 CPU server that can only handel Dual core CPU's
Or
A 2CPU server that can handle Quad core CPU's

Anny ideas or argumens welkome

Can the OS and the database even take advantage of 8 cores?

I believe redhat can go to 16 cores, possibly more. Go with Opteron Dual Cores. 4 of those will do great for you http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819105114

Since the quad cores are cheaper than the dual cores and will fit into most socket F motherboards, wouldn't it be better to go with 4 quad cores? What kind of motherboard were you looking at for using the processors? Quad Socket motherboards have a pretty high price, so it might make sense to got with dual quad cores if you can only get one server, otherwise it may be a good idea to get multiple single socket servers and run them as a cluster.

I'm not buildng these myself (to much cost involved if i mess it up )

but i think we'll be going for 2 quad core CPU's (of course 4 would be the best of both worlds, but the cost is prohibitive there)

thank you all for your advice.
