dual core or quad core - gaming

1- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

or

2- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor

I'm interested in gaming 'hardcore'. I'd like to be able to tab out and have no difficulties etc. I've heard for gaming the dual core is better? If someone could explain the differences between these two I'd greatly appreciate it.

For hardcore gaming you want to concentrate more on the video card and less on the CPU. You still need a fast capable CPU, but it's the video card that makes or breaks a hardcore gaming rig.

With a quad core processor you can do more multi-tasking than you could with a dual core processor.

If you're only playing games and the game isn't written to take advantage of multiple cores then having more cores won't make much of a difference. But if the game is written to take advantage of multiple cores then you'd probably want to go with the quad core...but I don't think too many games are coded for multi-core processors.

Go with the faster processor and the very best gaming video card you can afford.

Depends on the tasks you're doing. The processors in the dual core are faster than that of the Quad, so for tasks that can only use one processor, it'll be quicker. Games still fall mostly into this catagory, although as Cricket says, video card power has MUCH more to do with gaming performance. Still, unless you run lots of programs at once and/or will be doing lots of video editing, the dual core is probably more suited to you.
