upgrading old mobo
Hi, I've got a MSI K8T Neo2-F V2. I got it about 2 years ago and put a Athlon64 +3200 in it and have been pretty happy with it. Now I'm looking to upgrade my cpu since all the cpu's for sock 939 are really cheap now. I'd like to put a Athlon64 FX into my comp but I can't find any that would work with my mobo, have they stopped making them? The local computer stores only seem to stock the latest AMD cpu's.

Welcome to PCMech.
Socket 939 is AMD's older socket and was replaced by Socket AM2 a while ago and they are no longer produced, hence they are hard to find and expensive. Your best bet would be second hand off Ebay, or upgrade to a new motherboard. Newegg.com has 8 Socket 939 CPUs but they are grossly overpriced and far from worth it.

How high do you think I could overclock my current setup? I've tried in the past but my computer became unstable pretty fast since the Bios wont let me adjust the Vcore.

Here is the selection (3) of socket 939 processors from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ame=Socket+939
It doesn't have any dual core processors, so upgrading to one of them isn't a very good idea. You should be able to overclock about 20% without having to touch the voltage. For socket 939 processors, ebay is probably your best bet.

Hi k-man
If you were to OC your rig, you'd probably need to invest some ## in cooling supplies. IMHO, your hard earned $$ would be better spent on new hardware (MB/CPU/MEM) It may be a tough pill to swallow, but if you even get a low-end AM2 proc with an AM2/AM2+ MB, and memory (fairly inexpensive) you can upgrade in the future (better proc) for a lot less than buying top of the line equipment today. Good Luck with your decision. |

Yeah i suspected I'd need a new mobo since I bought the cheap one at the time. Untill I upgrade I would like to overclock my cpu a bit, I know how to do it and have good cooling but my Bios won't let me adjust the voltage for it. Is there program I can download to windows that would allow me to overvolt?
