Looking for a trusty Hardware Provider on the Internet
I'd like to know what Internet vendors you folks are buying your hardware/systems from. Who do you recommend? I would rather purchase open systems (no proprietary stuff).
Thanks for any input. Wanabe |

I use Mwave.com and newegg.com. Have never had a problem with either of them and their prices are extremely competitive.

Hi Wanabe,
I use Newegg.com and MWave.com also and would recommend them to anyone. I go to 2CoolTek.com for my cooling needs, but there are other good vendors that carry cooling supplies (can't remember them right now). Cricket

WWW.pricewatch.com is a good place to check prices. Be careful, some of the sellers listed there make up for advertised low prices with exorbitant shipping charges. If you decided to buy at locations other than the ones listed above, check them out at www.resellerratings.com

Personally, I love newegg as I find their prices are just a bit lower and so is shipping.
One suggestion though - find as many of the items you want from one site and order there. Even if their prices are a bit higher you'll save a lot more when it comes to shipping than ordering from several vendors.

I just ordered the parts for my new box and bought about 80% from Newegg.
I wasn't thrilled w/ thier selection of RAM, but otherwise thier prices were close enough to the lowball pricewatch price to make one-stop-shopping an economical choice. I ran into the "vaporware" problem w/ the ATI LE card (it comes and goes hour-by-hour) and when it disappeared from my order they upped the rest of my order to OVERNIGHT shipping. They did this w/o a peep from me; I never actually expected to get an LE, but it was worth a try:-) On top of this little gem of Customer Service, they also let me change my order about an hour before they packed it. Very good experience; now I just have to wait for my box and RAM to show up! A board and a chip aren't that much fun w/o a home (lol) The new 19" monitor, though, is temporarily living it up w/ my old system. Damn, it's fine! I would also recommend Gateway's Accesory store due to great shipping prices (free on $299 and up, I believe.) Thier selection isn't GREAT, but if they have something you are looking for, it can save you a bunch. I ordered from Axion and Component Authority, also, for this box and i will report any problems that arise. Computers4sure has always had good service, for me, but the prices aren't as competitive. If you NEED something overnight and don't want to risk availability, they would be a good choice. Egghead used to be that way, but, alas, they are mired in Chapter 11. For a big order, find a site that offers most of the components you need and do a little digging to make sure they are legit. A quick call can be very informative; It is much easier to tell the size and strength of a vendor over the phone than on the web. In, NY, unfortunately, I have to avoid NY dealers to avoid th 8.5% tax. I would also suggest checking prices for a week of two and see if they are stable. A site that flucuates day-to-day may be one to avoid. |

There's no reason to buy RAM from anyone but Crucial. They're still offering free 2nd day UPS shipping.
I also order cooling gear from 2CoolTek, and highly recommend them as well. Last edited by Xayd; 10-30-2001 at 08:31 PM. |

Newegg has a very good reputation but Mwave carries a much larger selection. I buy from Mwave almost exclusively because they're only about 20 minutes from my house so I just pick up my parts. They have a HUGE warehouse.
Xayd, I agree with you about Crucial but I usually just pick up memory at Mwave. They sell Corsair and Kingston and it's more convenient for me to pick it all up at once.
