advice on DVD player please!

i want to get a DVD player, but am not sure what to look for. I have a 5.1 sound card and i guess the moagor concern if the smootness of dvd playing for watching movies. I would also like to be able to rip DVD somewhat fast to make Dvix files. how importandf it the buffer size and speed(ie 12X or 16X)
what is a good buffer size to get,

example...

is it better to have a 12X with 1MB or 16X with 128kB?

help me out, any specific one would be helpful too, let me know what u think

I have a hitachi 6x(GD2500) and it plays movies fine - a 12x or 16x will do fine and as Hal said pioneer is a very good drive.

Check the 116 model out at Newegg.com here

My GD2500 (6x) has 512k buffer - that pioneer 116 (16x) has 256k buffer and both play dvd movies w/o a hitch.

The buffer isn't as important with the dvd drive. The buffer is more important with cdrw drives as the buffer is an inbetween for the reading and writing function. The dvd drive is just reading.

As we said the 16x pioneer is the best ide dvd drive available.
