updateing

I am going to replace a P4B266 board with a P5KPL board and new cpu E7200 power supply and ram plus a new sata hard drive.

I need to varify the steps to do this.

replace the MB,cpu,ram,and PSU.
connect the cd drive to the ide port with the old ide hard drive
connect the new sata drive to the sata port.
use the segate cd software to copy the old drive to the new drive.
remove the ide drive reboot
then install the MB drivers ect.

does this sound about right ?

First you will have to remove all the drivers while running on the old system, otherwise Windows? will not boot. Then follow the procedure as you mentioned.

The driver that would prevent Windows from booting is the Ultra ATA controller. All you have to do is change it to a standard dual IDE controller and it will work.

ok thanks:
but you knew this was comming.
how do I do that ?

just remove the driver, or do a driver roll back ?

thats one thing I have never had to mess with.

Device manager, highlight the master Ultra ATA controller, properties, driver, update driver, install from a list, don't search. Standard dual IDE controller should be in the compatible list. Install it and shut down.

update

all went smoothly.
I was very surprised how fast disk wizard copied evertyhing to the new sata drive.
even the ms thing was done online instantly, I though sure I would have to call them.

thanks for the help
