Drive Follow On

Hey,
So first thing is first:

One of my hard drives in my RAID0 setup shows Error Occured(0) while the other shows Member Disk(0).
Both of these drives are WDC RE2 160GB. Bios settings are Intel Controller set to RAID and GEN II forced. In the Intel Matrix Storage Console it says error, and I can right click on the drive and Mark as normal.

Anyway, is this an error with my harddrive, meaning do I need to do an RMA with WDC, or is it a RAID controller problem? I have tried resetting the array and then rebuilding it. But when I create a partion in the Administrator tools and try to mark it as active. This works, but then I try to format the drive and it fails.

I can still access both the drives when there is no RAID set up. To me, this points to RAID controller problem.

So here is the next question:

Is it possible to have 2 hard drives in XP that are essentially connected, meaning when one drive fills up it follows to the next?

Thanks for all the help.

Consumer grade RAID 0 is playing with fire. So are dynamic disks.

I would personally replace both drives with a single large drive - hard drives are dirt cheap these days. Then find some other use for those 2 WD's - maybe use them with a USB dongle for backups.

But does this warrant an RMA to get a new drive?

Not necessarily. I'd run the manufacturer's diagnostic tools first to see if an RMA is actually warranted.

Chances are there was a read/write error somewhere. It's good in that it's not an actual hardware problem. It's bad in that there's the potential for data loss.

To test the drives, format each one as a standalone, and run the WD diagnostics. You generally cannot get a RMA unless you get errors. If the quick test comes up clean, run the extended test.

Ran the extended test. Reports a pass.

Does that mean RAID controller is broken?

Board is MSI 975X Power Up Edition.
(Intel ICH7DH)

Thanks

Cancel that. Broken port (plus 2 broken cables)

Thanks!
