Problem with USB.
Just purchased a Flip Ultra video cam, tried plugging it in to all of my USB inputs with all others disconnected as well. I first get balloon with USB not recognised then in Device Manager it says under one of the hubs that it is an unknown device. All other USB devices work OK apart from a Flifght Sim that sometimes takes a couple of connections until it gets recognised. Have tried it on my Laptop all OK goes straight into Flip programme. Is there anything i can do before i ditch this computer? I am running XP home with SP2.

Have now managed to get it recognised as a mass storage device but with a yellow marker in device manager, when i click on it says (cannot open code 10). What does this mean please?

No, universal plug and play is UPnP. USB is universal serial bus.

Tried that also unplugged all other USB devices, still getting Unknown Device in Services.msc.
Any further suggestions please. Are there any other items in Services.msc i should double check? |

Is this USB Controller built in the motherboard or a USB PCI card?
It could be failing. Is it the whole controller or just one port not working? Do not reformat for this issue IMO Do other devices work in the USB port/ controller? Have you updated the drivers for the particular device? Is there too many devices drawing power from the controller? When did the problem start occuring? itstg I am trying to run a new Flip Video Camera, in any of my 6 USB 2 inputs i get the same response. all these inputs work fine with other devices connected. This camera has the programme all built in. As i said previously on my Sons identical computer to mine it loads and runs OK, his microsoft drivers are at the same mod state as mine. I have taken out all other devices and tried this on its own so it is not a power problem. USB is part of the mother board.

I received a reply from Flip Video Support, This is what fixed it. They sent a list of things to try, One of them was disable USB2 Enhanced Host Controller. When i now plug in Camera i get a balloon warning (This device can perform faster if you connect it to a USB2 port, for a list of ports, click here.) However clicking balloon opens up the Flip programme and it works 100%. Is there anyway that disabling this affects other USB devices that are connected. All appears to work as normal ie Mouse,ADSL Modem etc. I had a problem disabling USB2 Enhanced Host Controller, i could not disable it without going in to safe mode. Computers sure are a mystery, how can disabling a high speed USB facility fix problem?

Disabling that controller will now make all your USB ports 1.1 only - i.e. slow speed.

The reply from Flip Video Support is not something thats really address the problem IMHO, disabling the USB Enhanced Host controller will led to the highspeed controller being shutdown and left the USB1.1 controller taking up the task which is 40 times slower in paper specification.
If you can live with the slower USB 1.1 speed and wish to stick to it in future, you need to access the BIOS then navigate to the USB controller, change the current Highspeed setting to Fullspeed, save and exit the BIOS for the change to take effect. |

if it is a laptop you can try a usb refresh. just go into the device manager under universal serial bus controllers and right click to uninstall all usb root hubs. restart the computer. it will automatically reinstall the usb root hubs. if it is a desktop, you will lost your mouse and keyboard so don't do this for a desktop computer unless it automatically logs you in to the desktop after restart because if you need to enter a password or press ctrl+alt+delete to unlock your computer after restart on your desktop, your mouse and keyboard won't work because the usb root hubs are unistalled and won't reinstall until your computer powers up to the desktop. also check to see if you have the appropiate drivers. for any new usb device, once you plug it in, it should recognize new hardware and begin to install the drivers. it won't work without the appropiate drivers.

As a matter of interest to others i have fixed all my USB problems by fitting a D-Link mains powered hub, hope this can help somebody else.
