HDD partition creation fails to find driver

I am trying to create a new hdd partition on a secondary 'backup' drive that does not have my primary vista 64x os on it. (On this secondary drive - I would like to have two partitions)

In vista comp mgmt I am able to shrink the existing partition to allow enough space for a new partition. When I try to create a simple volume from the unallocated space into a new ntfs partition, vista wants a new driver to format/create it.

I have tried directing it to the system32 folder and the drivers subfolder but it didnt find it.

The Seagate hdd I am using says there are no downloadable drivers on their web site bc windows 'will provide all the necessary driver files'.

How do I get vista to locate the driver for this hdd partition?

I never had windows ask me for a driver when I partitioned a hard drive and then formatted it.

It should be like this: shrink the current partition, then create a new partition from the unallocated space, then do a format.

Ok I got it now. After the allocation I had to restart the system. It kept giving me a error and would not format it. Then it was looking for a driver. Just a simple glitch I guess

What if you try to use windows explorer to format?

If that doesn't work, try another partition manager like gparted. I like linux live cd's personally.

This is crazy.
I got it to partition and format after a simple system restart. That is what I had meant by, "ok I got it now", in the above thread (sorry for the confusion)

Now, it is asking me for drivers for both partitions every time I reboot the o/s.
Vista will recognize both partitions in disk mgmt, and explorer (and list their drive letter) from start up.

As long as I just hit 'cancel' in the found hardware window, all is fine.
If I search for drivers, it wont find them.
If I click "Ask again later" vista loses the drives until I restart the system.
If I click 'dont show me again' vista loses the drives and wont see them - even after a restart - and I have to do a system restore to 'see' them again.

Why would plug-n-play ask me for drivers for working recognizable hdd's every time I re-boot?

How do you know the "unknown device" is the hard drive?

because by choosing either two of the three choices shown in the image link, vista immediately afterward will not recognize the partitions as working hard drives. If I click cancel - all is fine.
