mouse problems

I have a Microsoft optical mouse and want to switch to a Sony optical mouse with memory stick reader/writer(for my digital camera). As per instructions in the book I installed the Sony drivers, then restarted. When I went to plug in the Sony mouse the USB port didn't recognise it. To make things far worse I thought I might be able to do this with out a mouse, I haven't had any luck. When it asks for the Manufacturer CD, I put it in check the drive and it brings up a message saying "drive doesn't contain a description of the device". I displayed a list fo recomended drivers, went down saw Sony. Oh my troubles are over? Not quite, I highlited it tried the install and half-way through it asked for the Win98 CD(why does Windows keep a whole bunch of files on CD so you have to remember where the CD is and then mess with CD changeing?). The drive with the mouse software wouldn't eject. So I put it in the CD-RW drive, and trying both drives, it didn't find the Win98 CD. So I restarted the computer with the Sony mouse still attached, and the led on bottom was showing that it was recognized? Untill windows started and brought up a "no mouse found" message. I plugged in my old mouse, restarted and it looked like it was working good. But a couple seconds after Windows booted it killed itself(sorta, first few times it brought up a fatal error 0025:00000028, next time the error was too complex for me to remember)

Anythoughts? How do I uninstall the Microsoft optical mouse drivers? Better yet, how can I get rid of this Microslop on my machine?

While in windows go to control panel then click on system then click on device manager tab double click on mouse.remove any mouse that is installed on the machine.
Then I would go to add new hardware in the control panel and install it.
When it asks if you want windows to detect new hardware answer no choose it from the list yourself then click on have disk then point it to the cdrom(your mouse installation disk). restart machine. This usually works for me.

boot to MS-DOS prompt and there typ SCANREG /RESTORE - enter select a date before the day when you tried to install the mouse - restart - now
1.make sure that the USB port is seen by the device manager and also that it has been enbled in the bios
2.when confirmed good and you can either see intel or VIA or what ever USB in the device manager - carefull Sis chipset have problems with the USB when it comes to modems or mice- then go to
3.insert the mouse into the USB - no need to restart - now New Hardware wizard actually should come up with the SONY USB MOUSE detected and asking for the drivers ..
4.insert the CDROM and let it spin up for a few seconds - this depends on how fast your CD can read the disk - install the drivers and there you should be of and running..

I think I could of done something really bad. I forgot to mention I'm in Win2K as opposed to Win98FE, and I have both OSs on one HDD, Untill I can find a way to seperate them or get around to seperating them. How do I restart Win2K in MS-Dos? I cant do a thing with Win98, almost immediatly it pops up with the fatal error. Good(?) news is I did find an old PS2 mouse, but I'm not sure how much good that will do. I have a bad feeling I might have to reformat, not like I'll loose anything too imporntant, cleansing my HDD would do some good.

If the error occurs on Win2k then when you see the White Bar on the black screen press F8 select = last good known configuration and boot up this will take care of it

For Win 98, when you come to the boot menu of WIN2K then first select Microsoft Windows with the up down cursor on the keyboard place your Finger on the F8 button and an otherone on the enter button press ENTER and immedialtely F8 as soon you have pressed Enter this will come up with Win98 Boot menu - select command prompt only and do as I told you above... in my first post...

I can assure you that this works...both ways - if you still get problems then let me know which of the OS is making problems -

I have posted several times suggesting how to copy the Windows cab files to the hard drive and doing your install from the hard drive. This is how all the OEM's install Windows. I haven't installed Windows directly from the CD in years once I knew better.

Really? I can throw(while maybe not go that far) my WIn98 CD out? Can you post a link so I can figure out how to save all the files on my HDD?

Anyways, back to mouse problem last question: Should I plug in the PS2 mouse and ditch the USB mouse before I un-install Intellipoint?

UH OH. Small(sorta big) problem. I ran SCANREG twice, it claimed succesfull both times, but it came up with errors 0028:000015 and 0246:014747FB Immeditatley after I clicked on something(BTW, I plugged in the 'ol PS2 mouse which is so old and full of dust the scrool wheel no longer rotates). Also, a program I installed after the resotore date still had it's Icon on my desktop. Anyone want to refresh my memory on how to reformat this and get it right? I'll probbably get rid of Win98 and have a ton of questions getting Win2K to run.

first - plug in the PS/2 mouse then start - do the SCANREG /RESTORE I've wrote in my previous message..
Second if you like to copy the Win98 CDROM to your hard drive then all you ahve to do is booting Win98 the anywhere on the drive - whatever drive you select - create new folder (oem will palce it in C:\Windows\Options and then just copy the ENTIRE \Win98 Folder to this location - no need to copy all the CD infact ony the *.cab files would already do the trick.. then there are some Subfolders within the \Win98 on the CDROM no need to copy them...
That's it..

I think there is no reason to reformat - unless you really have big problems - but you could load windows - now the next thing is to boot into safe mode and then there look at device manager and remove evrything you do not have anymore -
then also ADD/REMOVE programs remove the programs concerning the mouse - tehn when finnished clear out the temp folder - clear out temporary internet files - clear out cookies Defrag - do NOT REESTART when asked then copy the Win98 CD to your hard drive and finish this first then restart boot to Windows and let it detect the PS/2 mouse again onece more - then also make sure that the USB port is detected ...

After this post back - the we will take care of the Win2k business

The CD drive wont work in safe mode.

Yes, copy the contents of the \win98 directory on the CD without copying the subfolders into an empty directory of your choice.

Have you considered just getting a Sony memory stick reader and staying with a M$ or Logitech mouse?

I think Win2K is not gonna be a problem. In the add/remove I don't remember seeing any Sony at all on my PC, or Intellipoint. I did find a notepad file which said something about Intellipoint 1.00, which should be on the Win98 CD(?) and on my PC. Any thoughts? I'm really thinking about reformating or at least killing Win98 on this computer. I'm about to leave on a 2week trip tomorrow, and when I get back I should be getting some PC parts donated(however I have no clue what to expect).

Also about sticking with the Microslop mouse, I already have the Sony and it's gonna be a tough fight to get any mouse to work so why not force the Sony to win(however I think the PS2 is in the lead right now)?
