does USB hub need power?

I've got a D-LINK usb hub under my bed, it has two external HDD's and my printer connected to it. does this actually need to be plugged in? each of the external's get their own power.

still seemed to work. i guess since the hard drives have their own power and so does the printer, it's not necessary? I even ran the HDTune utility, external USB HDD still gets 30mb/s with or without power...

The hub has a power source for things that use a lot of power and don't have their own power source. 2.5" external HDD's without a power adaptor are an example.
