motherboard substitute.

Trying to find a substitute motherboard for my machine.
HP Pavilion a345w ( made for Wal-Mart in 2003)
P4 2.6GHz CPU 400MHz FSB (socket478)

Asustek P4G533LA mobo (400MHz)
Looking to replace board with different brand with 533MHz FSB support. Wanting to do this so I can install P4 2.8GHz CPU into machine and maybe do a bit of overclocking. Current motherboards chipset (845GL) has no choices in this area.
Before anyone says anything about saving and investing in a newer machine, I am doing this as an experiment on my back-up machine.

478 socket boards are scarce. Newegg has an MSI. It uses DDR2RAM and has a PCIEX16 graphics slot. I got one for a 478 pin P4 3.0 CPU I had lying around and it's worked well.

I honestly wouldn't bother. The HP power supply is marginal enough running stock, you won't have the "guts" to use any decent video card, much less overclock anything with. Boards with onboard graphics that will accept a 478 and will have overclocking options are hard to come by.

I can show you a decent board that will take 533 and 800 FSB 478's and has onboard video, but is not overclockable because it has a HP bios.

OK. Thats a couple of items to consider. Now, would the difference in FSB and .2CPU speed justify the expense, performance wise?
By the way, the 2.8 P4 has 4 times the L1 cache as the 2.6 currently installed.

No. It's not worth sinking any money at all into a HP. Run it the way it is till you can't stand it any more, then build a new machine the right way.

Be careful - those boards we have been recommending may not support a Prescott core!

So what low budget OCable board would work with the Prescott?

478 is obsolete technology and not worth playing with any more. Any suitable boards you find will be on Ebay and priced at more than they cost new, because the sellers know what they have. For what you are going to spend to get what you need to overclock that old processor, you can buy new stuff that will blow it away. Start saving money for a new build - the days of extending an old system's life by upgrading and overclocking are gone, not economically sensible. The fact that you have a proprietary name brand machine as a basis puts the nail in that coffin.

And you put the nail in the coffin on my staying here. I stated in the first post of this thread that this is an experiment on my backup machine. You have been nothing but "Doom and Gloom" in all your answers. I know that socket 478 is old, but I have had that old HP for several years and have gotten pretty comfortable with it. I know how it behaves and it still provides very good service for what I use it for. It has become more like a friend than a machine, and you don't just throw friends away because they are old. So just cancel my account. I will find a place where the people try to help.

What part of "close the account" don't you people understand? I have asked politely for that, but every time that I check in, I still have access. That tells me why nobody understands that I don't care about the price. I don't care that 478 band my HP is old. I was just looking for the answers to a couple of questions. All (mostly) that I got were derogatory comments about my machine and were mostly of no help. Now, one last time.CLOSE THE ACCOUNT.
