External HDD for notebook
Hi all,
my 6 years old Acer notebook is runnig very slow now and was thinking about getting an external HDD to replace the internal HDD. (no mobility required for my Acer notebook) By that i meant not storing anything on the internal HDD, better still, can i remove it? My intention is to store everything on the external HDD. Appreciate all advises. |

Get an external.,,,,.transfer all data that you want to keep. Do a good cleaning or a format on the internal. That should bring it back to life.

If you're not moving around, you might want to consider building your own external drive.
Apricorn enclosure, and a seagate drive of what ever size you want. If you want a portable external, I personally use a WD passport 2.5 drive. It works for the amount I use it.

If you think the internal is slow, just wait till you try running an OS over USB.
Get an external, copy all data to it, wipe the internal, and do a fresh install on it. Apricorn has a very nice external housing for 2.5" drives, by the way. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817155602 |

The notebook might have an option to boot off a USB drive....And yes, it'll be a lot slower then an internal drive.
Are notebooks upgradable? -> kind of....Can add more ram...Getting a 7200rpm internal drive to repalce the 4200 would make a nice difference... Keep in mind you can get a decent New notebook for under $500.

You may not even have USB 2.0 on a 6 year old notebook - and USB 1.1 is painfully slow. It also may not be capable of USB boot.
A wipe and reload should perk it up. |
