Premature HDD Shutdown

I just rebuilt a computer with an ASUS M3A78-T motherboard, Althlon X2 4850e, and 4GB Corsair XMS DDR 1066 (2 DIMMs). Initially I had a lot of issues getting RAID to work. I finally have Windows XP Pro SP3 on RAID 5 working as desired. However I am now having an intermittent problem when I shut down the computer.

Although the computer shuts down normally most of the time, occasionally when the screen says, “Windows is shutting down…” I will hear one or more of the hard drives click off, but the shut down screen will remain up and the rest of the computer will still be running. It then hangs at the shutdown screen for a few seconds before displaying a BSOD stop error 0x0000007A: “KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR”.

So far I have not noticed any data loss or problems when I reboot, but this behavior is unnerving and unacceptable in a brand new system.

I’ve already checked all the connections to the hard drives. I’ve run Memtest86+ for one pass with no errors. However is only showed 3576MB when it’s 4GB of memory. Windows XP only shows 3.24GB. The BIOS shows the full amount, but only shows some of it as usable. Is this just an OS limitation or is something wrong with my memory? Also, according to Memtest, the memory is only running at DDR835. Apparently the board only supports 1066 with one DIMM per channel. Thanks for the misleading specs ASUS!

I have the latest BIOS version that I could get from ASUS, 0502. However if you click on the “version history” it says the latest is 0602. There is no version 0602 to download on the page. Would be nice if this does exist, as it seems to have some fixes for some other minor problems I’m having.

This problem doesn’t happen very often so it’s hard to troubleshoot. I’m running out of ideas.

The memory shown is typical for 32-bit Windows operating systems. If you want the full 4GB to show up... you will need to install a 64-bit version of Windows.

AMD architecture is such that trying to run ram faster than 800 is pointless. 1066 ram is a waste of money.

Wish I had known that before I bought the parts.

Could this be causing my problem? Should I force the memory down to 800? Or do I need to replace it?

BTW, at the end of the KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR it makes a reference to the file fdc.sys. I did some searching and this has to do with the floppy drive controller. Is this just random or could the floppy have something to do with this?
