confused about how wireless printing works

ok laptop using intel proset program to find networks that are available. due to power being out, a friend nearby is letting me connect to his internet. It finds it just fine and works just fine.

However, I bought this brand new hp printer and set the cd on this laptop so that it connects wirelessly. That works.

but the intel proset/wireless program will only allow one connection at a time. So if I connect to the internet, it disconnects from the printer and if I connect to the printer, it disconnect to the internet.

This isn't quite making sense. You mean EVERY time I need to print something I need to disconnect from the wireless device "aka getting me to the internet" and than click connect to the printer and than back to the internet again?

I am not great on networking, but the answer to your question is no. The reason you are having to do it is either because of using someone else's wifi or you have it setup wrong. Basically the printer needs to be connected to the wireless network and then your print over that network. So you dont ever connect to the printer with your wireless card as you are doing. So either you connect the printer to your neighbor's wifi or when you have power back, connect your printer and latptop your our wifi. Or for now you can connect to the printer using the wired USB port option.

If you have no power, how is the printer working anyway?

The printer needs to be connected to YOUR router, whether it's wired or wireless. Printers don't like ad-hoc wireless connections directly to a PC.
