hello, i have a Maxtor 18.2GB 5400RPM drive (set as slave). recently the drive has been acting up. sometime when i start the computer it won't even get detected by the bios (usually unpluging the drive, turning on the computer, turning off the computer, pluging the drive back in, and turing the computer back on fixes this problem). more frequently in recent days than before the drive has been making the sound that it usually makes when it powers down to go to sleep. this happens a lot now, for exapmle when i'm trying to play an MP3 off the drive, it makes the sound like its going to sleep and the MP3 stops playing. is the drive going bad? it's only 2, maybe 3, years old. are there any solutions other than getting a new drive? thanks in advance. ~Andrew

It does not sound good. First thing to do is back up your files on another media. Then try using another power connecter if one is available of the power supply. You may be getting a bad power connection.

With this drive to slave, I take it that you have 2 hard drives installed. Some Maxtor drives require using 2 jumpers for slave settings not just one, and they call it special settings. Take a look at the Maxtor site, look up the settings for your model drive. Reconfig the drive for the settings if neccessary. they also have some drive diagnostic tools that you can use to determine if the drive is failing. Good Luck

i would try changing the power connecter, but i don't have any more free ones. however what i did try doing is switching the power connector. i switched the one that was on my slave drive (the one i'm having problems with) to the master drive. been using it for 6 hours now without a problem. my first thought would be that it is a bad power connecter, however this "bad" power connector is now hooked up to my master drive and i've had no problems with it.

It could be the pins on the drive where the power connects, I would inspect them.
Or it could be the lead on the power supply if it is you could easily replace the power supply. It does sound like a short somewhere. |
