Salvaging files from old drive

The drive in the computer I am current using is an IDE. I have an old Ultra ATA drive from my last computer that crashed that I would like to salvage a few files from. I tried to install it as a second drive in my current computer but could not since the cables are incompatible. Then I noticed that my CD drive uses the same cable so I connected the cable to the Ultra ATA drive and powered up and I got a CMOS message saying the new hard drive is incompatible then asking if I want to reformat it. I answered no, shut down the computer then removed the drive.

Question: Is there an easy way I can salvage these files from the old Ultra ATA drive without installing a new cable (?), or taking the drive to a tech, or some other expensive solution?
Thank you for your assistance in advance.

I forgot to mention - there is no damage at all to the old drive and no data lost. Thanks again.

The drive should have pin(s) on the back that are called jumper pins. Make sure it's set to the Master and that it's on the End of the ribbon cable. You can also try the jumper CS (cable select) .

The safest way is use a USB adapter.
