BF2 loads with one ROM drive but not the other

Hey all,

Not sure if this belongs in the gaming section or here but it is related to both. I decided to get back into BF2 after I installed my new HDD over the weekend and I used my 2nd drive which is an ASUS DVD-ROM drive to install and play it. Worked fine. I then installed the 1.41 patch for BF2 a couple of days later and when I tried to load BF2 afterwards, the screen to click "Start BF2" popped up but it refused to load the game. I put it into my top drive, a NEC DVD Burner (ND3550A I believe), it loaded just fine? I'd prefer to keep the NEC burner free for any DVDs or CDs that I want to write and keep the BF2 DVD in the ASUS drive just in case I ever want to play. Any suggestions? I looked to see if there were any firmware upgrades for the ASUS drive and there was one released in July 2006 which was like 6 months after I built this machine. Do you think that could be a cause or fix?

Wait a minute, you're not clear.

Once you install/put the game disk from/in your primary drive the drive doesn't work for anything else ?

hey pam,

I thought it was very clear but I'll explain again briefly...

After installing the patch for BF2 (1.41), the game no longer loads on my ASUS DVD-ROM drive... but will load with the NEC DVD-Burner drive. Before the patch, I could load the game on either. The startup screen up comes up on the ASUS drive, however it gives me an error when I click "start bf2". How's this sound?

Have you verified that the drive is still working properly?

Which drive is primary ?

edit : That's not really accurate, I think the drm stuff just got increased and you're losing your RW drive to it.

The ASUS is a DVD ROM drive, not a RW drive. It works because the BF2 splash screen starts when I put the DVD into the drive. The game will just not load when I press "Start BF2". So I have no clue at this point why it won't anymore because it would before I installed the 1.41 patch

Is that the drive which was used to originally install the game, and is the drive letter still the same?

I believe it was the drive I used to install but I did changed drive letters around with my new HDD and one of the optical drives... which might have been the ASUS drive. Will I need to edit something in registry?

You can use Disk Management to change drive letters around. If it works with the burner, swap drive letters between the burner and rom drive. It will take multiple steps.

Yeah I know how to change drive letters but is that the only fix? I changed F (NEC drive) to D and D (2nd partition on HDD) to F. So the ASUS drive was never messed with

EDIT***

As a matter of fact, I did the drive letter changes when I first installed the XP before I installed BF2 so that would be a non-issue

UPDATE:

Put the DVD into the ASUS drive today just to test and it worked. LOL! Weird. Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I still don't know why it happened but oh well
