Question Booting from cd-rom problem

I just built a new system. After fdisking and formatting the hard drive I chose item #1: boot from cd-rom. Now the cd-rom drive will not open or close unless I remove the IDE connector. When I reboot the system, I do not get any data on my monitor. The system is locked in this mode. How can I bypass this problem?

Are you using standard 40 wire or Ultra ATA 80 wire cables? If you are using 80 wire, you use Cable Select jumpering, not master/slave. Blue connector to motherboard, black to master, gray to slave.

Thanks to GLC & Confused. According to tech support, the problem is the mobo &/or the cpu. I was not getting any beep codes at startup. One more point towards wisdom experience. EQ
