Bios runs fine, then I get a disk read failure error

I have purchased a new ASUS P5QL Pro with an Intel Dual Core E5300 CPU.

I am using an existing hard drive from a older computer. I powered it up and BIOS ran fine and then I got a disk read failure. I have the 1st boot device set as my hard drive. It was set on the floppy drive but I disabled it because I dont have one. I thought that would solve the disk read error but it has not.

Read this: Repair Reinstallation of Windows XP (using XP CD)

Pay particular attention to post 3.

I followed that advice and changed the driver to Standard Dual IDE Controller. The WinXP was working perfectly before swapping out the MoBo. Anybody have any idea why it won't boot off hte hard drive? The hard drive shows up fine in BIOS.

I have not done the repair install of XP. I thought I could swap the WD Caviar Model WD800, IDE HDD without doing the repair install. I changed the driver to standard as recommended to me earlier before the MoBo install.

Thanks for all the help.

The computer the drive came from was a compaq 6029 with a AMD Athlon 2100, 1.73 GHz CPU. Several years old. Thus the need for speed and the new MoBo/CPU. Is it a problem trying to switch to Intel CPU?

The problem is using a hard drive from a Compaq. You need a new SATA hard drive and a new copy of Windows. IDE drives are NOT recommended on the new motherboards with 3rd party IDE controllers.

Compaq hard drives are not standard generic drives. They have proprietary firmware. You might be able to reuse it as a data drive if you zero fill it. You cannot legally use the Compaq Windows installation.
