what are your thoughts and experiences?

Hey everyone,

i'm currently building my 4th comp. its a low budget low performance build for my mom. this the first time i assembled a computer and got completely nothing when i hit the power switch.

i performed the out of case technique of troubleshooting and after swapping out PSU, RAM, CPU, i found that it was the motherboard. i tried an old nvidia board, i had laying around and it fired right up.

what i'm wondering is this: getting a faulty mobo is possible, but it doesnt seem likely. wouldnt the manufacturer test these things before shipping them out?

just wondering about other people's experiences, and maybe any suggestions b4 i send this back.

ps. i dont want to name the manufacturer, because i'm not out to slam them, but it is a very reputable name.

thx guys

It happens.

Just send it back for another one. If you bought from newegg, their rma process should be painless and quick.

I had three older identical pc's at the office....One died so I replaced the mobo and got a nice little performance increase due to the newer ram it took...Bought two more of the same mobo's...Neither one worked...

I have only ever had one mobo come defective and I have been an enthusiast builder since the early 90's. did you use a configurator for the RAM? Three defective boards sounds a little odd especially if the all failed in the same way.

I have had quite a few DOA motherboards over the years, but only one Asus board - and that was back in the Pentium 3 days. Yes, even Asus has defects. It's just some brands are more susceptible than others, NOBODY is perfect.

For less chance of having a DOA stick to Asus, if you can't find what you like in an Asus then Gigabyte would be your next best bet.
Stay away from ECS, PCChips, MSI, XFX, Zotac, Powercolor and Evga.

Note though, Evga makes very good video cards.

The only motherboard I've had to RMA was an Asus P5K-SE (which isn't too bad considering that I've used over a dozen of their motherboards without issues). I've used a few a few different brands of motherboards including Asrock, Asus, ECS, Gigabyte, Intel, MSI, and PCChips; out of those I've had the most reliable/good performance from Asus, Gigabyte, Intel and MSI.

I have had multiple failures from every other one of those brands you mention, Masaki.

Can we just let this lie and say that it's possible for a motherboard of ANY brand to fail?

I completely agree, any motherboard brand can fail; usually though there are some brands which fail less often than others.
