Overclocking FSB only not PCI?
Is it possible to overclock the FSB and not the PCI, I am using an MSI K7t266 PRO2-RU (KT266A chipset), and I have an AMD Athlon XP, 1600+. I currently have this running at the speed of a AMD Athlon xp 1700+ (1470MHz), using FSB overclock to 140MHz, one thing I would like to know is, is it possible to only overclock the FSB, because when I go though the BIOS, the only overclocking options clock The PCI at the same time. I am really only looking for a reason to this, as I am very inquisitive and I love learning new things (reason for building myself a new system - first one i built myself and it worked!!!).

I dont think you can o/c the cpu by fsb, and not any other things on your system... if you really want to o/c your chip, do it via multiplier...but damn you have an xp, those are fast enough....I wouldnt risk it, unless you really needed it...

The KT266A chipset does not allow for asynchronous FSB and AGP/PCI. The only board that I know of that supports this is the IWill XP333-R (not out yet) and possibly nForce boards. Hope that helps.

I dont think that many of u have understood what I mean, I want to know why it is that they make it that you can not overclock the FSB without the PCI being included. Why is it that the manufacturers make it this way?
And I know I can overclock the chip via FSB, I already have! Up to 1470Mhz (speed of the 1700+ so now my BIOS thinks I have an XP 1700+!!! My main reason is that I am a speed junkie and always want more. No real need, just bragging! LOL My main reason for asking this is because I am trying to understand as much as I can about computers (I know it will never be everything, but enough to help my mates with their PC problems). I want to know basically why they 'lock' it that you can only overclock both at the same time and not seperate. I have an idea as to why, but want some confirmation. I read in one of the threads ask as many questions as you like it's what the forums for! So this is what I'm doing. Thanks again David

oh, well they just made a setting, so you could increase your whole systems speed, including your pci...cpu, agp...and everything like that. I dont know why they made it that way...

A couple of Abit boards allow you to do this, most recently the KT7A.
I have mine set up this way (FSB/PCI is 133/33, with 8 added on top of that between CPU/Chipset/RAM only for 141/33). No other boards I've seen allow you to do this, though. That's why Abit is known as the board of choice for overclockers out there, they often allow you to do cool things like this  .

I feel the same as MSIuser, It's kinda like tryin to squeeze a couple more HorsePower out of the old Harley, you don't really need it,
you just wanna see if you can! |
