Setting SATA to IDE In BIOS

Does setting SATA to IDE in BIOS slow down SATA drives?

Since I was carrying over drives from an older system I set the computer up for IDE.
Everything is running well.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were some benchmarks that would show a difference but for day to day use I'm not seeing anything that suggest a speed problem.

Only if AHCI is an option. This enables NCQ which improves performance.

Thank you. I'm going to be mixing SATA and IDE. Old drives in my "new" computer. Hey, I'm no gamer...just do some lightweight video.

I'm not sure why you would want to set a SATA drive to IDE, except to avoid the 5-minute "hassle" of installing drivers from floppy.

Seems analogous to underclocking a processor.

I've got an Dell 8400 thats just about maxxed out the hard drive which is SATA. Can I take the 40 MG IDE drive out of my older computer and put it in as a slave to the 70 mg SATA? What about everything that is on the 40 if I want to save some of it but not all? It was the master on the other system and has XP installed which is what I'm useing on the dell with the newer updates.

Yes you can - but do note that SATA has no master/slave relationship.

I would recommend that you simply buy a large SATA drive and install it as a second drive. I would then move all your data files to it - it's real easy to move the entire My Documents structure with a few mouse clicks. The best use for the old IDE drive is in a USB housing for storing important backups.

Administrative note - in the future, would you please start your own thread for personalized assistance? It's only appropriate to respond in an existing thread when you are directly involving yourself with the exact topic. Thank you!
