Are Quad Cores making much of a difference nowadays?

Has some of the software apps caught up with the hardware? Is there much of a performance boost?

It makes a significant difference with audio (e.g. audio processing/encoding, VOIP apps) and video applications. Another good thing is that if an application hangs and keeps consuming 100% of a core, this will not render your system unusable.
