Acronis True Image 11 Problem
I am running a computer with one IDE hard drive (partitioned as C and D) and one SATA hard drive as E (emulated as IDE in the BIOS). I am currently booting from the IDE drive. When running Acronis True Image 11 from Windows, no problem exists. But when running Acronis from the Boot Media (CD-R), it doesn't see the SATA drive.
What might be preventing Acronis from seeing the SATA drive when booted from the Bootable Media?

The answer is that Acronis True Image Home 11 BOOTABLE MEDIA doesn't support SATA drives, although it will under Windows. Go figure. To get a bootable media for True Image 11 requires BART PE and $4.99 contribution to someone that has the plug in. Acronis Home 12 does have the Bootable Media support.

What brand are the HDD's? There is a free version of Acronic available for Seagate and Maxtor HDD's on their website.

I scrounged a True Image Home 2009 Boot Media. Works just fine without hassle.

Hmmm. I forget which version I bought. I think it was ATI 11, and I was able to use sata drives when I booted with the disc.
I'll try and remember to check that when I get home.

I believe it's dependent on the exact controller and what mode it's running in.

Boot from Windows, every thing is hunky dory. Boot from Acronis 11 Home Media, no SATA drive. The Boot Media from Acronis 2009 works just fine.

It does depend on the controller/mode and the reason for this anomalous behavior is that the boot media uses linux to do the hardware detection and Acronis uses a very outdated linux kernel for its boot media. This old kernel doesn't have support for newer hardware. Ironically, the the rebranded version of True Image that comes with the Apricorn external hard drive enclosures called "EZ Gig" has an updated version available with a newer kernel and much better hardware support.
I think I went through this with glc once some time ago. He's the one that told me about the updated version available from Apricorn tech support. Thanks for that glc. |
