Can someone clarify this once and for all?

Does a Promise ATA66 or ATA100 card NEED a HD drive attached before it works or can it initialise with just optical or Zip devices. I seen both views put on the forums and like to know which is correct. I've scoured Promise and other sites but no one gives an answer to this simple but important question.

Also, using the Promise card, what is best arrangement for two HDs and say two optical devices and one zip drive? The two HD's on the promise and the rest on the mobo channels?

I don't have a Promise card, so I can't try it for myself.

The Promise cards are meant for hard drives only! Put CD drives, Zips, etc on the motherboard controller.

One short note - Promise Controllers do not like Overclocked Systems where the PCI bus EXCEEDS 33 Mhz...!!!
