Intake/Exhaust?
I have an old computer I'm using.
It does not have a case fan. There is no vent on the back of the case but there is a vent on the front (basically a bunch of holes). The only fans in the case at the moment are the cpu fan and whatever is in the PSU. I want to mount a fan in the only place possible - the front vent. Should I have the fan intake air into the case (there is no exhaust fan or even vent, just a few removed backplates) from the front or use the front as an exhaust?

Before you do anything, measure the interior temperature to see if a fan is necessary at all. Run a stress test. After 15 minutes or so into the stress test measure the interior temperature. If it is getting above 110F-120F, with an ambient temp of 70F, then consider getting a fan or two. Given it is an old computer and has never had a case fan, can get by on one intake fan if you have a place for air to exhaust out the back.
I am wondering though why it now needs a fan when it never did before? While you are at it, take some time to blow all the dust out of your old computer. If you have not done this within the past year, it probably needs it. You will probably never need a fan if you keep it clean inside so that the internal components do not heat up excessively.

Are you having heat issues? If not, dont bother.
EDIT: Beaten, thats what I get for getting sidetracked.

It is a PC that originally came with Windows ME.
I want to use it as a server so I'm installing 3 HD's in it. I just want to keep everything cool. I can't be bothered running stress tests and measuring temps. I thought it would be simpler to just stick a fan on the case. |

It's a tough call.
If you are installing your hard drives in the front lower section of the case and you plan to use the fan as an exhaust then the internal heat in the case is going to get drawn over the hard drives. If you draw air in then you are going to need a decent air filter to stop the innards clogging up with dust.

I installed one HD in the HD bay, one in the floppy bay (I removed the floppy), and two in the optical bay.
It's tight. I ran hddtemp (I have ubuntu server installed) and the HD temps are 40-50 C. I'm not pleased. Is there any problem with placing the HD's one their side? |
