I am building this system for my father who is an accountant. He needs to be able to run DOS, not DOS through windows. It was my understanding that the large drive would need to be formatted using 16-bit format in order to use it in DOS. I may be way wrong here, this is my first build and in addition I am not too familiar with Windows, although I am learning a lot on this little project.
As for the USB support, my Windows 95 disk claims to have USB support. And as far as I know The USB is working fine under windows until I install those Tyan drivers, that is what the Device Manager reports anyway. Unfortunately we don't currently have any USB devices. I wouldn't really worry too much about this, but this will be my fathers primary work computer and if he adds a USB device in the future it would be good if any problems were already resolved.
Also, I checked out the Tyan site in hopes this problem might show up in their support area, with no luck. But, I'll go take another look.

Question

System-
Tyan 1854 motherboard
Celeron 500
64MB
ATI Xpert 98 AGP
Windows 95 formatted with 16-bit file system
and partitioned.

Here is the deal. All is well until I install the drivers that came with the motherboard. During the install it prompts me to insert disk with updated USB driver. I have tried the Tyan disk and the Win95 disk. If you go into Windows Device Manager the PCI USB is under other devices and it says the drivers are not correctly installed. Anyway, I figured I would ask for a little guidance.
Thanks for any help,
Norm

Hmmm.. why a 16bit format? I don't believe windows95 is going to give you support for USB. You may as well disable it in the bios so it quits looking for drivers.

Check microsoft site for win95 updated usb support drivers. USB support in win95 is quite bad compare to win98.

Search the Win 95 CD for "usbsupp" and run it. It's not in the cabs directory.

The only reason to use fat 16 is if you are going to *dual boot* with Windows and Dos 6.22. Fat 32 works just fine starting a 95B system up to command prompt only *or* restarting it to Dos mode or running any Dos program in Dos mode. Win 95B is actually Dos 7.x underneath Windows 4.x.

Thanks glc, very helpfull. I am using a 20GB hard drive, My reading led me to believe I had to use 16-bit format in order to be able to see/access the entire drive while in DOS (dividing it into 2GB partitions). Is this correct? Could I have used the 32-bit format and still partition the drive for DOS?

Are you planning to install Dos 6.22 *and* Windows in a dual boot configuration or are you going to run your Dos apps from the "Dos" that is under Windows 95? If the former, you need to stick with fat 16 on any partitions that Dos 6.22 needs to see, including the boot partition (C). If the latter, just do fat 32.

glc-
My father wanted to be able to use Dos without going through Windows, so all is well. USB is now working great. Thanks again.
