Acronis question

With Acronis, I am trying to back up my C drive onto a Western Digital 750 gigabyte external drive. When I go to do this I get an error message that says..."Error 1364 A specified authentication package is unknown (OxFFFO)

I did a Google search and one person on another forum was saying you need to make a change to the registry to correct this problem. It seems to be a pretty common problem because there were a number of posters all with the same problem. I would imagine Acronis knows about the problem. I dont have the nerves though to make a change to my registry based on one persons opinion on how to fix it. I checked in Acronis's help page and they make no mention of the problem. Acronis does not seem to have a customer support number either.

I found this http://microsoft.pcerror.info/errorc...FShGagodChQcbg downloaded it and tried installing it, but it does not apply to Vista 64.

What might I try?

Personal rant....It should not be this hard to get information from software companies about problems with their software. Its total BS when they do not provide phone support nor provide answers to common problems in their help websites. Sometime it feel like you are on your own after you buy a product. Its as if all they care about now is that they got your money!

Rant off

Boot with the CD to clone or image the drive.

Really?...wow. That's a boot CD as well as a software package? I will have to look up how to image a drive. Is that the same as cloning a drive? Any recommendations on where to look up how to image a drive?

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
I use EZ Giig II for cloning/disk imaging and it's an oem version of Acronis. Once you boot to the disk, it's simple and intuitive to create or install an image. Same for cloning.

An image is just that - a compressed image of the drive. It can be explored and restored. If you installed the package on the computer, it should have installed a PDF user's manual.

If all you want is to image the drive all you need to do is click on "Create image' and select the drive/partition you want imaged and the drive you want it imaged to : For instance image 'C' to 'G'.
I use normal compression and I have Apricorn check for errors after it's done.

It helps to use a date for the image file, I usually keep the last two, but unless other people use the computer skip encrypting it.

David,
I used google to search the Acronis support forum and came up
with one hit at the link below. See if that answers your question
or try posting on the Acronis forum if you don't get a good enough
answer here.

http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3127

PS: I think you need to clarify if you need to "clone" drive C: or
are you attempting to "image" drive C:. Are you looking to
schedule an automatic backup of drive C: or would you be happy
to simply backup/image drive C: manually on a one time or
infrequent basis.

Thanks much Pete. I completely missed the reference to the Error 1364 that you found.

What I am trying to do is backup the C: drive with a cloned drive. This worked fine for me using Acronis and I am very happy with being able to plug in and go with my cloned drive in a matter of a few minutes, as if nothing bad ever happened.

The other thing I am trying to do is to do incremental data backups to a 750gig Seagate drive. When I use Acronis to create the incremental data backups, I get the error message.

Apparently what "imaging" is, is duplicating and compressing the files, if I correctly understoood someone elses eariler description of imaging? I don't need to compress the files since it is a little over 500megs being written to a second, one terrabyte drive. Given this, and my technical inabilities and the fact that I have never imaged a drive, I think a cloned drive would work better for me than an imaged drive.

Thanks again.

David

Incremental backups require a full image first for a basis. All scheduled backups with Acronis use the imaging system, not the cloning system.

David, the Acronis Forum thread suggests that Error 1364 is related
to authentication/passwords. I've seen this issue before with other
software that utlizes the Windows Task Sheduler to perfom a task.

Try adding a password to your Windows User account and try
setting up Acronis again to image your C: drive to the external
drive.
