WD External HD
Hi Gang
I have this WD ext HD a WD5000 EO32. and every once in a while I look over at it and the blue lite is like doing a slow pulsating thing. it is not on according to looking in the my computer properties. Does any one have an idea of what could be doing this.? It is not very old and I use it to back up an XP computer. I also try to shut it off by pushing in on the button, and it will not shut off either. It will not shut off or come on too. I have other HD backups, but this is my first WD. Is this normal.? Thanx....Gunny

Hi Gang
Do you mean to tell me there has been 44 people looking at this problem and no one even has a good guess as to what is causing this. This is sure not the old PCmech I have used for a long time. You are right I keep saying this, but it is true. Not even one guess out of 44 people. Thanx...Gunny |

The WD My Book units I've had apart due to failed hard drives have a blue led in the front to show that the drive is connected via usb to the pc. That "button" in front of the blue led is just a plastic lens to enlarge the light - it's not a button at all. Pushing it will do nothing. As long as the usb is connected, the light is on. If the light is pulsing, I suspect the drive is being accessed. Unplugging the power or unplugging the usb should turn off the light.

Hi Panama Red
I knew there was someone out there that knew the answer to this problem. Your explanation sounds right on the money. Its funny they make the button on the front with the blue glow, as being able to push in like it supposed to do something. I have had other Back up storage units and they had a button on them that actually worked. Thanx for getting back to this post Panama, do you agree with what I said about 44 lookers.? I know you have been with PCmech for a long time. Thanx ....Gnny |

Hi Panama Red
Lets hold the phone on my last post, maybe there are diff Mod's of this WD book but if you hold in on that button long enough it does shut off. I guess I have not be holding in long enough, and I have read that on these types of devices you have to let them like wind down, similar to shutting off your computer. I had to hold in on that button about, say 10/15 seconds. I am just use to pushing in a few milla seconds I guess like most things. Thanx....Gunny |
