Not Reading CD Drive on New Op System Boot
I just installed a new hard drive in my Dell PC. I purchased a new op sys CD as well. I installed the op sys CD in my CD drive. When I start the computer, I press F12 for system set-up. I then scroll down to 5, boot on "CD ROM device." Then it just sits there - nothing.
I restarted with F12, and ran 7, dive diagnostics. It is seeing both the hard drive (master) and the CD drive. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have any other bootable CD's to try? Your CD drive may be shot.

I would suggest geting into bios to set your laptop to boot from the cd drive first. it seems whatever is/or is not happening - is keeping the unit from accessing the cd drive.
I think on a Dell it's F! to get into bios, but I'm not sure.

I pressed F2 and got into BIOS and setup. Changed the startup sequence so the CD drive would be first. Rebooted. Now the LED on the front of the CD drive flashes (as if it is hitting the drive), but I do not hear it spinning up.
Bad CD drive? Connection problem? Can I copy the op sys CD to stick and boot from stick? Thanks. All help appreciated! |

Try blowing the dust out of the cd drive.
Look in the BIOS to see if your boot sequence suppports botting of USB devices. |

Your drive is failing or improperly connected or jumpered. Try reseating the cables.
XP is not installable from a stick without going through a lot of hassles, it's a lot easier to replace the drive if necessary. |
