Emachine hard drive replacement

I purchased a replacement for the hard drive that inside a desktop emachine. First, I am having trouble securing the hard drive with the 3 screws that I removed. Second, when I tried to reboot, my bios settings must be wrong; it would not recognize a portable cd drive which has the system recovery disk. Finally, it didn't recognize the hard drive. Does it have to be secured to work? And does anyone know what the settings need to be for it to recognize the portable cd drive. (my internal cd drive won't open. should I disconnec it?)
