USB Flash Drive - XP says it's full when it is not?

I have a Kingston 16gb flash drive that I'm trying to transfer an 8.74gb file into. It has been wiped and formatted and appears to be empty. When I try to transfer the file into the drive, it says "The disk in the destination drive is full. Insert a new disk to continue." Any idea why this is? 'My Computer' shows 15.6 gb of free space.

It has to be formatted NTFS to handle a file larger than 4gb.

When I right click on the drive and select format, the only option in the menu is for FAT32. Is there a 3rd party program that can format it in NTFS?

Fyi: Its is a Kingston 'DataTraveler' and I'm scanning it with H2testw at this moment to see if it may be a counterfeit drive.

What you need to do is use Disk Management to delete and recreate the partition - then NTFS should be available.

When I go into disk management, the 'Delete Partition' selection is grayed out. 'Mark Partition as Active' is also unavailable....

EDIT: I just tried this http://www.ntfs.com/quest22.htm which did make make NTFS available but when I try it, it says 'Windows was unable to complete the format.' Selecting FAT32 afterwards allows a complete format. I'll try it on another system....

You may have a counterfeit on your hands.

Im beginning to think so.... the NTFS format also didnt work on the other system. Funny thing is, I can use all 15.6 gigs on fat32 with multiple files under 4gb each.

Now THAT is strange.........

You have done exactly what Kingston's FAQ's say to do - email their tech support.

Also might want to try using the instructions in the article posted on this thread about recovering flash drives. May be just what you need in order to get the full capacity out of the drive. Just be sure to follow the instructions as they are given.
