Installing second ATA drive
Hi,
Hopefully there is someone out there who can help me with my problem. I am trying to add a second HDD to an existing system for storage purposes. Both HDD's have XP installed in addition to other programs and data files. Windows will boot in either one when used as the only drive with the other drive unplugged. When I set the jumpers to master (for drive 0) and slave (for drive 1) and try to boot with both drives hooked up, here's what happens: Both drives are recognized in BIOS, and after POST, Windows starts trying to boot (ie. the black Windows XP page appears along with the progress bar moving normally).......then I get a very quick flash of a blue page with yellow text (too quick to read anything) and then it goes to a black page saying "no operating system found", etc. This will stay in a continual loop and Windows will not boot. Therefore, I can't get into disc management to format the new drive if need be. I have tried just about every jumper setting there is for the second drive while leaving the original drive settings as "master". Should I set them both to cable select? Any ideas or suggestions? Thank you in advance. |

As long as you are using an 80 wire Ultra ATA cable, you should set both to CS and put your intended master on the end of the cable and slave in the middle. The only one that will successfully boot is the original drive - a drive with XP out of a different system will bluescreen during the boot process.

Thanks GLS......I will try an 80 wire cable next. Don't they have a different color on the end that attaches to the mobo?

Generally, yes. Blue to mobo, black on the other end, and gray in the middle.

Thanks alot glc........I installed an 80 wire ribbon cable and set both drives to CS and now the system is booting and working flawlessly. You saved me lots of time, headache, and probably money. Again, thank you and PCMECH for your timely response and "no frills" approach to handling such questions/problems for all of us not as gifted or knowledgeable. I will continue to view your forum and feel confident in the answers that you guys deliver.
Now, on to a new thread regarding another question I have. |
