Acronis cloning problem

Hey all,

I just tried using Acronis True Image Home 11 to clone my OS hdd. I used the CD, rather than do it through Windows, as I've read that's the best way to do it. After all was said and done, I unplugged the hdd I cloned from the system, and when I tried to boot to the new clone, I received an "NTLDR is missing" error.

I popped in the Windows 7 recovery disk, and thankfully I was able to repair the hdd, and boot to it successfully (I'm actually booted to it right now). So, in the end, it all worked out OK. I now have a fully functional clone. Now for the big question:

Why the heck did that happen, and what can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again?

A. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have to do a repair after making a clone just to get it to work.
B. I'm a little worried that the next time I clone a drive...I may not be so lucky.

In general, I love ATI. I've had nothing but ease and success with backup images and am very impressed with all it has to offer. I would really like to be able to take advantage of its cloning capabilities, though, without the above issue.

Any clues as to why this happened?

Thanks a lot

Matt

It's been a while since I've used the full Acronis True Image but IIRC, when cloning an entire hard drive you have to specifically tell it to also copy over the mbr which is the first sector on the hard drive containing the boot loader. The missing NTDLR error message is symptomatic of a missing windows boot loader.

Hmmm...really. I don't recall seeing any kind of option to do that. I just figured it did it automatically, but I'll definitely have to check that out. Thanks for the tip.

I just did a clone with Acronis. You go to Tools/Clone Disk. Select Automatic. It then has you assign a Source Disk to copy from and a Destination Disk to become your cloned drive. It then warns you that "The destination hard disk you have chosen contains some partitions that could contain useful data. Click OK to confirm deletion of all the partitions on the destination hard disk drive." By clicking OK, it starts the cloning process. There are no other options.

Have you tried using the disk that comes with it as a boot disk?

You might also try zeroing out the drive to be cloned (using that Acronis function) before you run the cloning function.

are you sure that ATIH 11 understands win7 completely? I thought that lately released 2010 version is the only fully compatible with Windows 7...

kee-ripes!

I didn't even realize that ATIH 11 was the 2009 version. I guess you're right. I do need an upgrade.
