CPU Upgrade Possible?
Hi guys, I am looking to upgrade my processor, but I am unsure of what I can do. Right now I have a Pentium D processor at 2.8ghz, I dont know if its possible for me to go much higher unless I can go into core 2 processors. my mobo is a D945GCFG1, its a gateway computer. Can someone give me a hand? there is some info on the support site, but I am not sure if it gives out any valuable info.

If Gateway is unable to tell you, it's hard to say - because it's a proprietary board and Intel does not show any CPU support for it. However, I'm reasonably certain that it will support Conroe core Core 2 Duo 6xxx series (1066 FSB) - but don't get that confused with the new 6000 Wolfdales.

is that just because you are looking at the FSB, I am not entirely sure how it works.

I'm looking at the 945G chipset and some other forum posts I found with Google.

No, some motherboards will support a wider range of processors - and when you are talking about Gateway and other large OEM's that use proprietary motherboards, the chances of having a wide range available is quite slim. They almost always have a very limited bios setup to avoid a lot of warranty claims from people fiddling around in there.
