Bios Setting Question
ABIT KT7
I gig Athlon Thunderbird IBM 30 gig ATA/100 HD ATI Expert 2000 32MB AGP 128 bit DVD Video Playback Card Creative Soundblaster PC128 sound DVD CD-ROM CD burner Win 98SE I replaced the original 128MB memory stick (PC-100 SDRAM) with a 256MB stick (PC-133 SDRAM), using the same slot. The computer recognized 256MB memory but wouldn’t do much else except lock up, so I switched slots and now the computer seems to be using the new memory. My question is this: In the BIOS, I have 5 settings for memory, 8/10 ns, Normal, Medium, Fast and Turbo. Which would be the best setting for my setup? I’m not new at this but I don’t know a heck of a lot about BIOS settings. Would it be better to experiment or does someone know which setting works best? The original setting with the 128MB stick was 8/10 ns. Thanks, Bill. |

Kind of depends on the memory, what brand did you buy? Try the different settings and see. Could run some benchmarks and see what works best or if it starts getting flaky back it down a step. I would think fast if it is decent memory.

Hi wazzat,
In my experience with the abit kt7 series boards (used in eight different systems) these boards are picky with memory. There are several settings in the bios that affect memory performance and rather than try to tell you all of them, I would suggest the following http://www.viahardware.com/faq/kt7/kt7faq.htm Check out the article on Memory optimization. It has a ton of info as well as links to other articles. justbarron |

Thanks pardegt, you're right, fast is good. The stick I bought is a Micron PC-133 256MB.
Hi justbarron, thanks for the link. I learned all I ever wanted to know about ABIT boards on Paul's website. Excellent website....answered all my questions. I see he needs donations; for all the work he has done I think he deserves them. Thanks again tooya, Bill Last edited by wazzat; 11-20-2001 at 08:40 PM. |
